Learning about and Resisting Racism: Some Resources

Friends and colleagues, I have been heartened to see so many people sharing resources for those who want to teach about and learn about systemic racism in order to resist it and to bring about change. This is a short post that simply collects links to other resources, and I will update it as I find more sources.

Three Google documents have curated collections, one focusing specifically on anti-racism resources for white people. This includes links for parents, popular media/news resources, links to academic books and articles, podcasts, recommended videos, films, and TV series, plus links to organizations to follow on social media and other resources.

Another document is labelled “Scaffolded Anti-Racist Resources” — it draws on multiple sources, including the article linked above, and breaks those down by topic and suggests action steps.

And this document, Justice in June, breaks things down by how much time a person might want to spend daily in learning how to be ally to black community members.

Until August 31 you can read books about racism for free on the University of Minnesota website, “Reading for Racial Justice.”

JSTOR (an academic service that indexes and provides full-text for academic articles) has a new daily newsletter feature that integrates insights from academic articles and news coverage of social issues, politics, culture, and related issues. They have a newsletter called “Institutionalized Racism: A Syllabus” that contains links to good news coverage (especially some long-form coverage) and academic work.

Here is a link to a seminar syllabus on the social psychology of race and racism, which I learned about from Prof. Jeff Hunger, a former undergraduate in our sociology program: syllabus here.

If you want something less academic, this Medium post on 75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice is more oriented to practical, everyday steps you can take.

And here are some resources for parents: Raising Race Conscious Children.

If you know of other good collections please let me know and I’ll add to this post.
